Night of the Doctor (The TV Movie and Doctor Who: Shada)

I find myself more confused after watching the eighth doctor's tenure. His personality seems to have shifted without warrant and I'm unsure why he wants to be a warrior. For a Doctor who has always proclaimed his abhorrence towards violence, why pick up a sentimental item and declare yourself a warrior? Once he does regenerate and we see the Doctor gaze at his reflection, the face does not seem to match Paul or John's. Who is looking back at him? If we do see eight begin to regenerate, but we know he does not turn into nine then how is this regeneration process working? The mini episode seems to cater towards Whovians more familiar with Tom Baker and other classic doctor's era rather than the rebooted version we've had with doctors nine, ten and eleven.

If you feel at equal loss for words and can't seem to get excited over this miniepisode, then maybe these links can help.

ORIGINAL POSTS
I've seen this twice now and have three main impressions (a) Steven Moffat puts a lot in six minutes (b) Would this have been more meaningful if I had seen Paul McGann  before the short film? (c) I wonder how this will all tie in with our anniversary special.

At this point, I'm a little unclear of how drinking the potion, which initially reminded me of an Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade type moment, will point the Doctor towards the dark side (if you will). I do like the nod about knitting.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and chat about it in the comments or through google+.

Edit: I'm currently trying to track down Paul's Doctor Who: Shada (2003) and tv movie in 1996. I am, however, familiar with him from Luther where he played Mark North.

Edit 2:
17 observations/questions on the tv movie
1. Sylvester is reading H.G. Well's The Time Machine

2. Sylvester (7) dies because the doctor's didn't believe he wasn't human and killed him with a defibrillator. I thought the scene was interesting given we see Matt's fear of the defibrillator in The Power of Three.

3. The regeneration scene was compared to Frankenstein's monster.

4. Interesting cinematography with Paul looking at his reflection in shattered glass and numerous television screens.

5. The locker scene was cute with Paul looking at a scarf and a fedora, which seemed to be a wee nod to 4 and 7. I'm not sure why a person would have had such a dated costume in their closet for Paul to wear though and I don't really know why Grace was wearing a corset.

6. Interesting that people would comment on the sexuality in Moffat's era, but seem to have no problem with Paul and Eric both being shirtless.

7. Does anyone else think the Master looked a bit like the Terminator or T-1000?

8. It's cute the Doctor knew Puccini, DaVinci, Freud and Curie.

9. I never understood why people were so hell bent on the 12 regeneration rule until I heard the Master say that was how many times he could regenerate.

10. Love seeing the Doctor kiss Grace.

11. The Doctor is half human?! on his mother's side?! What?

12. Where do all these jelly babies come from?

13. It's cute seeing the Doctor on the motorcycle. It reminds me a bit of Matt and Clara.

14. The contraption on the Doctor looks a lot like something out of Clockwork Orange.

15. Apparently Rory and Amy are not the only companions that can resurrect from the dead.

16. How does the Master kissing Grace make her human again?

17. I wish they didn't do another Frankenstein reference with the Master yelling I'm Alive!

Interestingly enough, the film was shot in Vancouver, Canada. You can read more here

You can watch Doctor Who: Shada here and with Paul in the animated series

Are you excited about November 23 and The Day of the Doctor?

If you are a Whovian like myself, you probably have heard all the lead ups and news related to the upcoming 50th Anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor. I thought it might be nice to gather all the news together and we can all freak out a bit.

THE LEAD UP

We were first teased about the upcoming episode earlier this year when we saw David and Matt talking about working together.

At the time, David mentioned how he felt about working with Matt. You can read more about it

Most Whovians remember the controversy surrounding a trailer presented at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year. Fans were not allowed to upload the trailer online, but it didn't stop them from talking about it. In order to avoid spoilers for some people, I suggest eager fans can read about it here.

Doctor Who Revisited aired their special on David on October 27 and will air Matt's on November 24. I've been watching all the episodes starting with the first doctor as they provide a nice overview along with some classic episodes.

For more dedicated fans, they can purchase a book with pictures over the last fifty years or a short story by Neil Gaiman

Fans have also been given the opportunity to place themselves in the opening titles for a Save The Date campaign. If you have a facebook account, you may want to go here or to the site here. I count myself amongst others who have tried it and loved it along with this little teaser featuring Benedict Cumberbatch here

The same people have also put out this lovely video featuring Matt teaching us about hashtags

And BBC did give us a teaser trailer

Lest us not forget some important dates coming up:

Sat 9 November BBC will release the official trailer for The Day of the Doctor just before 8pm on BBC1

Thurs 14 November BBC2 will air Science of Doctor Who featuring Brian Cox and Matt Smith

Fri 15 November  Children in Need will host a telethon and hopefully we will get to see Night of the Doctor.

Fri 22 November David Tennant and Matt Smith will be on the Graham Norton Show

WHAT WE DO KNOW
There's been talk of scenes with River Song and Rose in the upcoming episode along with a few other items. I've read them. I just need to find you the links again. In the meantime, here is what we do know so far about the plot.

Radiotimes (where I seem to get all my news) told us the plot takes place..
"in 2013, something terrible is awakening in London's National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor's own dangerous past comes back to haunt him."

You can read a bit more analysis here

We've heard the story about David and Matt comparing sonic screwdrivers earlier in the year as well. You can read more here

We know it's shot in 3D and you can read more here and Matt's 90 ft stunt in Trafalgar Square. You can read more here

A couple of the ladies on set have shared their experiences working with our men. Billie talks about how she was torn between David and Matt here and how Joanna Page was freezing when she kissed David here

I think I need a new word. All I can see is blue "here" everywhere. lol. Now here are some photos from the upcoming episode.

For those who are rewatching the series like me, you may recall the Dream Lord mentioning the Doctor's time with Queen Elizabeth. "Queen Elizabeth the first. Well, she thought she was the first."

I will post more when I can get to it, but I hope you enjoyed the links, pictures and videos.
