What do the photos of Time of the Doctor tell us about the upcoming episode?

There is something to be said about fans who have a bit too much time on their hands. I awoke this morning and thought I will sit down to write a post examining the photos released a couple days ago for Time of the Doctor. You can find all the photos here

BADDIES

We knew Cybermen would return in Matt's farewell episode, but what do the pictures imply? It seems like we might be witnessing the evolution of Cybermen. There are definitely two distinct species with similar characteristics. We know the wooden and mechanical both have lighted centrepieces and a the design on the chest and head are the same. It is what makes them recognizable as Cybermen.

The key difference lies within wooden versus mechanical. There is definitely a layer of steam punk in the first two photos as opposed to the third. The material in the first two seem to be a combination of wood, plastic and electrical. It is possible we are looking at the origins of Cybermen as the environment surrounding the Cyberman in the second photo seems a bit rustic. It is also possible they could be the next subspieces of Cybermen created with the intent of using the Doctor's weakness with wood against him. There is also a tiny part of me that speculates it's not wood at all, but rather rust. An abandoned group of Cybermen left to wander Trenzalore without any other regiments to back them up.

We also knew the Daleks would return in the farewell episode as well. It's hard not to notice the burgundy cape and wand The Doctor is holding in the first photo; but it does seem there hasn't been any real changes to the mythology surrounding Daleks in these photos.

CLARA

Our companion that will lead us from the eleventh (thirteenth) to twelfth (fourteenth) Doctor is also key. The third and promotional photo is distinct from the first two, which seem to be from the actual episode. We can surmise that Clara invites the Doctor over for Christmas, which is why she is holding a turkey and has a paper hat on her head. We've seen footage of Jenna filming where a paper hat flies off her head as she strolls towards the Tardis to greet the Doctor. She seems to be holding a piece of technology in her hand in the second photo and that may come to help her in the story. Other than the fact she looks like she's listening and witnessing, there isn't much we can infer from her posture, gestures or expressions.

DOCTOR

The first three photos show us the Doctor in his costume that will most likely be worn by Peter Capaldi. The Doctor seems to be investigating mysterious areas whether it be a village, a place selling trees or has many trees, and what might be the Cybermen's lair. I think the setting in the three photos speaks more than the actual costume or expressions. I'm curious what others think of these environments.

Now we're back to the enigmatic cape. The Doctor has torn off one of the Dalek's plunger or eye piece and is now wielding it above his head as something explodes beside him. Okay, maybe he found the Dalek part and is holding it up as a form of defence, but considering we are about to embark on a darker Doctor with Capaldi my guess is that he has torn it off. His expression and hand gestures seem like he is trying to reason more so than threaten. As for the cape, I can only assume it is something worn on Trenzalore. I'm not sure if it is suppose to be what Time Lords wear, but it keeps making me think of Harry Potter for some reason.

Now we're back to the much talked about decapitated Cyberman head. For some reason, I think this is more of him picking up a live piece off the ground rather than him tearing it off. Since he seems to be on the phone with the head, I suspect it's more investigative than calling to announce his defeat of his foes. I wouldn't be surprised if we were to begin with him investigating the head and that's what brings us to the wooden/plastic/rustic Cybermen we saw earlier.

DOCTOR AND CLARA

We have seen most of these promotional shots before, but what I thought is interesting is that no one seems to mention Matt's wig. I think it's a testament to the makeup/hair department that it does seem quite natural. Again, we see the Doctor carrying the Cybermen's head as he looks around his area and points his sonic screwdriver making me believe more that we are suppose to infer the head is what starts the story.

NEW CHARACTERS?

Since I'm slowly blurring the lines of what I have read and posted individually and what I post here, I'm not sure anymore if I read about this particular character. I'm also not sure what to make of her from these photos. It could be that she's leading an army or surrendering herself to one. Given her hair, makeup and costume, I think she might be from Trenzalore. I'd love to hear your guesses on that one.

I'd love for us to have a chat about this so please leave a comment on the page or by Google+ so we can discuss it further. There's nothing more fun that talking with fans about a show we love so much.
