I can try my best to answer the question as we journey through the blog. I can always tell when an actor hits me a certain way. I have a rather silly assessment I do, but it seems to work. What would you be willing to do for this person?
I should begin by saying I evaluate actors in the same light book collectors look at literature, art collectors look at paintings, and so forth. If you loved computer programming or technology, I look at actors in the same way you would look at Bill Gates or Steve Jobs. The same goes for science. It's the way you think of Stephen Hawking. These actors are rarely just performers, but works of art that can inspire and change the way you view all things. They can be a muse, symbol, reflection, or anything you fancy.
There are some actors that impress me and I'll keep my eye on them and remember to look into them every now and then. Some actors are intoxicating. I take a sip and now I need to swallow the whole bottle and search for more.
Some actors evoke raw and deep emotions that the very core of me is somewhat altered or reflected back upon me. Almost like me holding up a mirror in a safe environment so that I can see all the beauty and ugliness within me.
There are only a few that stir deep within me and live so entrenched in my being that it's difficult to articulate what it all means. These actors are easy to spot as there's nothing I wouldn't do to be near them. Well, ok. There are some things. I'm not a stalker. I don't feel like we are bonded or meant to be together. In the end, it's less about them and more about me and what they might mean.
I have a deep admiration for Kenneth Branagh. I flew to Sheffield, England to see him play Richard III. I visited Belfast to get a sense of what might have influenced the man he is today.
I did the same with Ewan McGregor. I flew to London to see him in Guys and Dolls and visited Perth, Scotland.
I do this in the same light you have heard of wine collectors or business people will go to the vineyards to see the conditions in which the grapes are grown to give it that exact flavour.
I should point out I don't fly well. In a rather expected situation, my ears should hurt and possibly I will vomit. In worst case scenarios, my ears bleed, I collapse on the floor of the airplane, and I suffer from a variety of issues. Flying overseas for someone is a bit of an endeavour for me.
I have a Benadiction and think he is one of the most gifted actors to ever walk upon this earth, but he's not a part of me.
The question becomes would you fly to the UK for Benedict Cumberbatch? No. I'd just fantasize about him. Would you fly to the UK for Matt? Yes.
So why is Matt so special? The last time I felt this strongly towards an actor was Rissell Crowe 13 years ago. I'd like to say it's because he got me to do what others thought was impossible and that's to turn me onto Doctor Who. That answer is too simple.
I'd like to say it's because he dimished my ageism and awoke a part of me that I didn't know existed. I'm five years older than Matt making him the only person younger than myself to evoke this amount of admiration. It would be nice to say age is just a number and muses can be found anywhere. I think it goes deeper than that.
I'd like to say it's because I always considered myself a bit odd, but I didn't realize how odd until other public figures and journalists kept saying Matt was strange and I thought he was normal. The idea of self realization and embracing our quirks would be another great answer. I don't think that's quite it yet either.
No, the answer to the question is a bit more like a riddle that needs puzzling out. I do think the first step is with that thank you note. The second is trying to work it out in your head. The third is finding the answer. I'll let you know as soon as I find the real answer.
